2021 Oscar Predictions


I'm a big movie guy, I usually watch most if not all the big movies. So when the Oscar Noms come out I am always interested. Over the course of the last 5 years I have correctly predicted Oscar winners at a stunning rate of 84%, best Oscar predicter the globe has ever seen. Now the trick to picking Oscar winners isn't picking the best movies, that's far too easy, you have to know what the Academy looks for in movies and acting. Generally they look for weird ass movies, period pieces, and dramatic weight loss, that is about it. So let's give it a shot here, eh.



Best Picture

“The Father” (David Parfitt, Jean-Louis Livi and Philippe Carcassonne, producers)

“Judas and the Black Messiah” (Shaka King, Charles D. King and Ryan Coogler, producers)

“Mank” (Ceán Chaffin, Eric Roth and Douglas Urbanski, producers)

“Minari” (Christina Oh, producer)

“Nomadland” (Frances McDormand, Peter Spears, Mollye Asher, Dan Janvey and Chloé Zhao, producers)

“Promising Young Woman” (Ben Browning, Ashley Fox, Emerald Fennell and Josey McNamara, producers)

“Sound of Metal” (Bert Hamelinck and Sacha Ben Harroche, producers)

“The Trial of the Chicago 7” (Marc Platt and Stuart Besser, producers)

Nomadland-It won best picture at the GG, the movie stuck out loud, so it's the easy winner here. The top 2 movies here are Promising Young Woman and Sound of Metal.


Best Director

Thomas Vinterberg (“Another Round”)

David Fincher (“Mank”)

Lee Isaac Chung (“Minari”)

Chloé Zhao (“Nomadland”)

Emerald Fennell (“Promising Young Woman”)

Chloe Zhao for Nomadland - Same reason as above. Emerald Fennell is a rookie director but should have won this.



Best Actor in a Leading Role

Riz Ahmed (“Sound of Metal”)

Chadwick Boseman (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”)

Anthony Hopkins (“The Father”)

Gary Oldman (“Mank”)

Steven Yeun (“Minari”)

Chadwick in a landslide. A tremendous performance that I'm not sure how to did under the conditions he was in. Riz also had a great performance but not better than Chadwick. RIP to a great one.



Best Actress in a Leading Role

Viola Davis (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”)

Andra Day (“The United States v. Billie Holiday”)

Vanessa Kirby (“Pieces of a Woman”)

Frances McDormand (“Nomadland”)

Carey Mulligan (“Promising Young Woman”)

This is where I am conflicted. The Academy probably goes McDormand but I thought Carey Mulligan was fantastic in a stunning performance and movie. I think we see a surprise here with Mulligan, and she deserves it.



Best Actor in a Supporting Role

Sacha Baron Cohen (“The Trial of the Chicago 7”)

Daniel Kaluuya (“Judas and the Black Messiah”)

Leslie Odom Jr. (“One Night in Miami”)

Paul Raci (“Sound of Metal”)

Lakeith Stanfield (“Judas and the Black Messiah”)

Daniel Kaluuya, he did a great job with this role and also had the weight gain the Academy loves.




Best Actress in a Supporting Role

Maria Bakalova (‘Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”)

Glenn Close (“Hillbilly Elegy”)

Olivia Colman (“The Father”)

Amanda Seyfried (“Mank”)

Yuh-jung Youn (“Minari”)

I haven't seen alot of these movies. Go with what the Academy traditionally goes for and that is a foreign film almost no one has seen. So it's Youn.



Best Animated Feature Film

“Onward” (Pixar)

“Over the Moon” (Netflix)

“A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon” (Netflix)

“Soul” (Pixar)

“Wolfwalkers” (Apple TV Plus/GKIDS)

Soul - Nothing else comes close. Easiest pick of the night. Great flick too.

This is maybe the hardest pick of the night. My sense is they give it to the established vet, also a man, also a white dude, very Academy like. Sorkin it is.

This has to be Sound of Metal. One of the best movies of the year and the sound and lack thereof was quite impressive throughout the film.

Tenet has to win something for the amount of time and money that was invested into this flick.
